08What Coachella started

The short versionThe things that left the polo field and kept going: reunions that became world tours (one grossed $584.2M), a second weekend Austin City Limits copied, and a webcast that once made you "like" a gum brand and is now a YouTube exclusive through 2030. Then a look, a suffix, a payment plan, a family of spin-off festivals and a food truck. Coachella rarely invented these things. More often it was the biggest stage they ever got.

In January 2019, Burna Boy found his name in the third line of the Coachella poster, in small type. "I am an AFRICAN GIANT and will not be reduced to whatever that tiny writing means," he wrote on Instagram.244 Later that year he had an album out called African Giant.245 It was nominated for Best World Music Album at the 2020 Grammys.246 The complaint about the small type had become the name of a record.

That's the pattern of this chapter. Coachella rarely invents things outright. It's where they get big, or get named, or get a price tag. Daft Punk's pyramid, the obvious first entry, has its own chapter.

Reunions that became tours

The festival's reputation for reunions starts in 2004. The re-formed Pixies played the main stage before Radiohead and, in Rolling Stone's words, "nearly stole the show."247 It wasn't their first show back. That was a warm-up added on a week's notice at the Fine Line in Minneapolis on April 13, 2004.248 Coachella was the big public test, and they toured on it until late 2005.247

Then came the bigger ones.

Rage Against the Machine, 2007. Coachella confirmed the reunion on January 22, 2007. On April 29 the band closed the festival, their first full show in almost seven years, to "the biggest crowd of the weekend."249 Tom Morello's explanation: "the times were right to see if we can knock the Bush administration out in one fell swoop."250 By Wikipedia's count the tour that followed ran to July 2011, six legs and 50 shows on five continents.251 They were named 2020 headliners too. The pandemic took 2020 and 2021, the 2022 lineup didn't include them, and in January 2024 drummer Brad Wilk wrote that the band "will not be touring or playing live again."252253

Pulp and the Stone Roses. Two dates get mixed up a lot. Pulp re-formed in 2011 for European shows. Their US return came in 2012, built around the two Coachella sets, with Radio City Music Hall on April 11 and the Warfield on April 17.254 The Stone Roses re-formed in 2011 and played their giant UK shows in 2012. Coachella 2013, where they shared the top of the bill with Blur, was their first scheduled US date since.255

Outkast, 2014. Coachella was the first stop of a 20th-anniversary run of more than 40 festivals, with both Fridays to themselves. Big Boi: "It's truly an honor to celebrate 20 years and still be free to do music the way we choose."256

Guns N' Roses, 2016. This is the reunion with the biggest receipt. Axl Rose, Slash and Duff McKagan played a $10 warm-up at the Troubadour in LA on April 1, 2016, then two nights at the new T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, then Coachella on April 16 and 23.257 The festival was the big unveiling. The tour, "Not in This Lifetime...," ran until November 2019 and grossed $584.2 million from 5,371,891 tickets. At the time, Billboard ranked it the third-highest-grossing tour in Boxscore history.258

2NE1, 2022. During 88rising's main-stage set, CL brought out Dara, Park Bom and Minzy for "I AM THE BEST." It was the group's first performance together in six years.259 In July 2024 they announced a full reunion and a 15th-anniversary tour.260 The announcement doesn't credit Coachella. The timeline does the talking.

Blink-182, 2023. They were added to the bill late, and their April 14 set was the first reunion show with Tom DeLonge. Mark Hoppus, back from cancer treatment, posted: "Chemo to Coachella. Very much in my feelings today."225 A world tour started that May, and a week after the reunion set they were closing weekend two in Frank Ocean's slot.225

No Doubt, 2024. Weekend one was the band's first show in nearly a decade, and Olivia Rodrigo joined them for "Bathwater." "I didn't think this was really going to happen, did you?" said Gwen Stefani.261 It didn't stop at the polo field. In October 2025 they announced six nights at the Sphere in Las Vegas for May 2026, and the AV Club's report on it pointed straight back to Coachella.262

Two weekends, then everyone

In 2011 the festival sold out so fast that a lot of fans couldn't go. Paul Tollett's choice was to clone the festival instead of growing it. On May 31, 2011, he announced a second, separately ticketed weekend with the same lineup for 2012.32 He gave three reasons. More people wanted in than the site could hold. He didn't want to "ruin the show" by adding about 40,000 people a day. And resale prices of $500-600 struck him as unfair.32

Austin City Limits went to two weekends in 2013. Music Festival Wizard's report described it as "following in the footsteps of mega-festival Coachella."263 Goldenvoice reused the trick itself: Desert Trip, the 2016 classic-rock festival on the same field, added its second weekend after the first sold out.264 The other thing the format produced, the running joke about weekend two, is covered in the moments chapter.

The stream

In 2010, if you wanted to watch Coachella online, you had to "like" the sponsor, Wrigley, on Facebook, and you got one act at a time.265 A year later YouTube streamed three stages on separate channels, about 60 bands over three days, and nearly 4 million people watched. Ad Age's Andrew Hampp estimated the sponsorship cost in the mid-to-high six figures.265 Nine Inch Nails' Rob Sheridan summed up the logic: "An experience is the best kind of scarcity."265

Within three months YouTube had signed up to stream Lollapalooza and ACL as well.266 Coachella kept setting the records. Beyoncé's 2018 set peaked at about 458,000 people watching at once, by TMZ's figures as The FADER reported them.212 In September 2026 YouTube extended its exclusive global deal through 2030, both weekends. It said the 2026 stream had set its record for concurrent viewers, though it didn't give the number.267

Holograms after Tupac

The 2012 Tupac was a Pepper's ghost on Mylar, not a hologram, and it's told in the moments chapter. Dr. Dre said it was "strictly for Coachella."205 The idea didn't stay there.

In 2014, Hologram USA and Musion Das went to court to block a Michael Jackson projection at the Billboard Music Awards. They claimed patents on "the technology that brought Tupac to Coachella 2012." They lost.268 In 2018, BASE Hologram put a projected Roy Orbison on a 28-date tour, with Tupac at Coachella explicitly cited as the precedent.269 People sometimes connect all this to ABBA Voyage. No source we found makes that link, and Voyage uses different technology, so it stays out.

The Sahara and the boom

Firsts on the main stage

Bad Bunny. At his 2019 debut, by Wikipedia's account of Billboard's report, he asked the crowd, "I want to know where the Latinos are!"270 In 2023 he came back as the first Latin artist to headline.271 Three years later Karol G became the first Latina headliner.272 She closed the 2026 festival, with Becky G, Mariah Angeliq and Wisin as guests on weekend one.273

BLACKPINK. In 2019 they were the first K-pop girl group to play the festival. In 2023 they were the first K-pop group to be billed as headliners.271 (Some outlets said "first Asian headliner." The careful sources say K-pop.) The 2022 lineup had already shown where things were going. 88rising's "Head in the Clouds Forever" was, per Billboard, "the first label-curated set ever to hit the festival's main stage," and it brought out Hikaru Utada, who had "never played a festival, even in Asia."274 It went the other way round from what people assume. 88rising's own festival, Head in the Clouds, came first, in 2018. Wikipedia notes that outlets nicknamed it the "Asian Coachella."275

Afrobeats. In 2019, Burna Boy and Mr Eazi were the only African acts on the bill.276 Quartz noted that Wizkid had been booked the year before and didn't appear, citing visa trouble, and that Black Coffee's 2016 debut got him rebooked on a bigger stage in 2018.276 Seven years after the small type, Wizkid and Tems came out during Justin Bieber's headline set.240

The look

Coachella did not invent boho. CTV traces the look to Sienna Miller at Glastonbury in 2004 and to the runways of 2003-05: Chloé, Cavalli, Bottega Veneta.277 What Coachella did was give it a name and a backdrop. By the mid-2000s, Dazed writes, celebrity attendees including Paris Hilton had made boho "Coachella fashion." Then Instagram arrived:

"Coachella fashion was no longer just about the clothes. It was about content."278

NYLON's year-by-year timeline runs from forehead headbands (2009) through "a sea of flower crowns," all-white crochet credited to "the Vanessa Hudgens effect" (2018) and florals "boosted by the Revolve Festival" (2019), to "cowboy cosplay" (2024).279 In 2015 H&M made it official with what it called the "first ever co-branded collection" with the festival, in about 350 North American stores.280

The look also had a problem: faux Native American war bonnets. On April 9, 2014, Victoria's Secret model Alessandra Ambrosio posted a selfie in a feathered headdress, captioned as getting inspired for Coachella.281 The bans that followed came from other festivals. Coachella itself never adopted one, per CTV.277

By 2019, CTV wrote, "the most offensive examples had largely disappeared from Coachella."277

The influencers, and the brand houses

Heineken was the first big sponsor with branded experiences on site, in 2006, according to Hypebeast. H&M, Amex and Absolut followed, and around 2014-15 the influencers arrived with stylists and brand-paid houses. Hypebeast's verdict: "Coachella has become the influencer's Met Gala."287 By 2012, the first two-weekend year, BizBash listed a crowded weekend-one party circuit: Lacoste pool parties, the Guess Hotel in La Quinta, Neon Carnival in a hangar in Thermal. The brands stuck to weekend one for the media and the feeling of being there first.288

The biggest player was Revolve. It first flew influencers to the festival in 2013.289 Its own Revolve Festival started in 2015 at the Avalon in Palm Springs, according to WWD; Business of Fashion dates it to 2016.290289 By 2022 it was a two-day invite-only festival with headliners like Cardi B, SZA and Travis Scott, peaking at about 5,000 guests. BoF's headline put it plainly: "Revolve invented influencer marketing as we know it."289 The season was worth real money. Revolve "typically earns about 30% of its yearly revenue in the weeks around Coachella," Retail Brew reported in 2020, citing the New York Times.291

Then the pullback. In 2019 Sephora, H&M, Urban Decay, Too Faced, Kiehl's and Maybelline scaled back or dropped their VIP experiences. One consultant told Glossy: "A $1,000 VIP wristband doesn't equate to a social campaign that is usually more than $100,000."292 In 2022 Revolve's own invited guests were left waiting for shuttles in the heat, and the internet called it Fyre Fest. LA Magazine's Joseph Kapsch described being "stranded in the dirt with no water, under the hot sun for hours." Revolve apologized.293 By 2024 the festival was down to one day and about 1,200 guests.289 Big branded venues shrank. Influencer budgets, Dazed reported in 2026, did not, and the top ones reportedly run from "high six figures to over a million dollars."278

"-chella"

The linguist Arnold Zwicky files "-chella" as a libfix, a piece of a word that broke off and now means "festival" on its own. His examples include #Bookchella for the LA Times Festival of Books.294 Fans coined Beychella in 2018, and Dictionary.com logged Arichella for Ariana Grande a year later.213

Goldenvoice's lawyers have kept busy with it. The festival sued Hoodchella, an underground LA one-dayer, in 2016, seeking an injunction and more than $100K.295 Brokechella, a DIY LA festival started in 2011 as a "bargain alternative," became BROKE LA in January 2016. "We got too big and they wouldn't let us be Brokechella anymore," its organizer said, without naming who "they" were.296 In Wales, a Cowbridge festival called Cowchella became Moo-La-La after a complaint from Coachella, according to a UK promotions trade blog. Its founder, Ian "H" Watkins of Steps, called himself "a threat to their ginormous, juggernaut of a machine."297 In 2025 a dog-friendly festival got a cease-and-desist, which World Trademark Review called "just the latest" over the suffix.298 Some got away with it. In October 2023, a pub in Collie, Western Australia, held Col-Chella, a one-day festival with a stage on the back of a truck.299

Paying for it

In 2009, in the middle of a recession, Coachella offered a layaway plan. It came back for 2010 with a choice of 50% or 10% down and automatic installments through February 15.300 By 2025 about 60% of the crowd was using the payment plan, according to a Billboard report as relayed by Entrepreneur.301

The other direction was up. By April 2010 you could reserve a "Coachella Safari Tent": a queen bed, air conditioning, power outlets, VIP wristbands, a shuttle, backstage access, a 2 a.m. curfew and one case of beer per person.302 Palm Springs Life later counted 100 VIP safari tents at about $6,500 a weekend for two.303 By 2026 the ladder ran from $160 car camping through GA at $649 for weekend one to Lake Eldorado lodges at $2,300 and tents at $3,000.46 Nobody we read credits Coachella with inventing glamping. It did sell it early, and it turned it into a product line.

A family of festivals

Goldenvoice used Coachella's field, crew and name to start a run of other festivals, each with a narrower audience.

Goldenvoice's own festivals page now lists more than a dozen, from Portola in San Francisco to Head in the Clouds and Splash House.308 It didn't invent the nostalgia festival. InsideHook points to All Tomorrow's Parties as an earlier example. It did help turn the idea into an industry.309

The food

Roy Choi's Kogi truck came to Coachella around 2009, and UPROXX credits it with helping push festival food toward chef-driven vendors.310 The festival's real food push came later, and it started rough. In 2014 Coachella brought in LA chefs including Josef Centeno and Kris Yenbamroong of Night + Market. Yenbamroong said he threw away about 75% of his food: "people just weren't into it."311 A year later the festival had $225 Outstanding in the Field dinners in the Rose Garden.311 By 2016 those cost $225 on their own, $600 with GA or $1,124 with VIP.312

Other festivals took up the idea. KAABOO's CEO, Jason Felts: "Chefs are the new rock stars."310 Coachella wasn't first, though. LA Weekly noted in 2015 that Outside Lands and Jazz Fest already ranked food just behind music, and that Coachella ranked it lower.311 What Coachella did was give the chefs top billing and put the dinners in a garden.
