12The build, the art, the ticket, the food
The 2024 Sahara tent sits on about 1,500 tons of concrete. Crews poured roughly 156 truckloads of it into underground footings starting in December 2023, working overnight so the trucks stayed off Indio's streets in daytime.83 The structure on top is steel, not the old aluminum, and 320 ft long by the Desert Sun's measure.83 Elation, which supplied 956 of its lights for the rig, gives the footprint as about 400 by 410 ft and nearly 100 ft tall, with four headliner-level acts a day and changeovers as short as 10-15 minutes.129 The Desert Sun's 320 ft and Elation's 400 by 410 ft don't agree, and neither says how it measured. That is the permanent part. Almost everything else on the grounds is put up from scratch each spring and taken away again within weeks.
Five weeks on a polo field
The clearest look at the build calendar comes from a job ad. AEG's stagehand posting for 2025 asked applicants to be available from Mar. 17 to May 9 and gave the expected work period as Mar. 30 to May 3.91 Duties were staging, truck loading, scenery rigging, and helping with audio, video and lighting, on day, mid and overnight shifts.91 By the dates, that window takes in both Coachella weekends and Stagecoach, which uses the same grounds right after.
The crews also have to talk to each other across a site that big. For the two festivals in 2025, Clear-Com's intercom covered 12 stages over three weeks, with 61 wireless beltpacks and 23 networked panels.415
Specialist crews arrive in waves. Rat Sound, the PA company, starts prepping gear about two weeks out, and its trucks start rolling onto the site about a week before doors.126 The art installers get about 11 days.416
Some of it gets built at a speed nobody planned for. Between the two weekends of 2019, crews built a grass hill from nothing for Kanye West's Easter Sunday Service: dirt went in on Tuesday, sod on Thursday and Friday.365 The hidden speakers in it were designed by Perry Tollett, the festival chief's brother.365
The work is dangerous. On Apr. 6, 2019, a Goldenvoice lead rigger who had spent 20 years on the Coachella team died in a fall during stage setup. Indio police called it an industrial accident, and OSHA led the investigation.417
When it is over, the site flips. For Stagecoach, the main stage is rotated 90 degrees, the Mojave becomes the Palomino, the Sahara and the VIP rose garden go unused, and most of the large art leaves.84 The Ferris wheel stays put.84
The PA
Rat Sound has done the audio for almost every Coachella there has been - 18 of the first 19, as of 2018.126 That year the system was mostly L-Acoustics: about 847 main cabinets across the site, not counting sidefills and wedges, with 168 K2 cabinets on the main stage field alone.126 Rat Sound put 65-70 people on the festival and rented 25-30 local houses to sleep them.126
The desert has its own rules for sound. In high wind, and at night, the PA hangs and delay clusters are lowered and tied off.12689 No published decibel limit for the festival turned up in the research for this chapter; the limit that is published, and enforced in dollars, is the clock.
The curfew meter
Coachella has to stop at 1 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, and midnight on Sunday.72 Run past it and Goldenvoice pays the city: $20,000 once a set goes five minutes over, then $1,000 for every minute after that, into Indio's general fund.72
The meter runs most years. In 2023 weekend 1 cost $117,000, with sets running long every night; Frank Ocean, who arrived late, went 25 minutes over.72 "Guys I'm being told it's curfew, so that's the end of the show," he told the crowd.72 On weekend 2 of 2026, TMZ put the bill at $44,000: $20,000 for Justin Bieber's two minutes and $24,000 for Anyma's nine.418 Those numbers suggest the $20,000 covers any overrun up to five minutes, with the per-minute charge after that. The same report has Paul McCartney running 54 minutes over in 2009 for $54,000, which predates the current schedule.418 The pyramid chapter has the other famous overrun.
Power
The grounds sit in the territory of the Imperial Irrigation District, the public utility that powers Indio, not Southern California Edison.419 How much of the festival runs off IID's grid, and how much runs off generators, has never been published. The festival's own sustainability page lists what it does in general terms: renewable diesel for generators, on-site solar panels, "available utility energy" and "hybridized power."140 One stage is specific. Since 2025 the Do LaB has run on "zero-emissions battery systems."140
The headliners bring more. PRG supplied power distribution as well as lighting for J Balvin's main-stage set in 2024.420
The same page says about 35,000 people camp on site, that the festival doubled its water spigots, and that Coachella and Stagecoach together composted or recycled 616,278 pounds of waste in 2024.140
The livestream machine
In 2010 Coachella's webcast showed one act at a time. In 2011, YouTube streamed three stages on separate channels to nearly 4 million people.265 By 2026 the stream covered seven stages plus a 24/7 "Coachella Station."421
It is produced by Springboard Productions, led by Hank Neuberger, who has produced Coachella's live content since 2007.422 In 2024 the operation used more than 200 crew, six video trucks and one director per stage, cutting live sets with no rehearsal.422 Coverage had moved from sports-broadcast cameras to cinema cameras and lenses, and each stage got its own broadcast mix.422 One vendor, Media Stream Wave, says it supplied two trucks and 40 Blackmagic cameras for screens and broadcast across all eight stages that year.423
Directing blind is the job. No rehearsal means the director meets the show at the same time as the viewers do.
In September 2026 Goldenvoice and YouTube extended their exclusive deal through 2030, covering both weekends. Terms were not disclosed. YouTube said the 2026 stream set its record for concurrent viewers, without giving a number.267
Cell towers on wheels
A field full of phones will swamp an ordinary network, so the carriers drive in their own. A COW is a cell on wheels: a mobile tower on a trailer. In 2013 AT&T ran an 18-beam antenna and at least three COWs, peaking at about 83 GB an hour and moving 6,054 GB over the two weekends.424 By 2016 it had a "Drum Set" antenna and four COWs, 59 beams in all, and its customers used 29.2 TB.425 In 2026 T-Mobile brought "multiple" COWs and offered satellite texting as a fallback.426
The art
Paul Clemente has run Coachella's art since 2007. Before that he spent 18 years in Hollywood effects, on miniatures and rigging for Titanic and The Matrix, and he now leads the festival's own fabricators.87 His rule, as PBS SoCal's Artbound put it in 2013, is the "largest, most dramatic" pieces that can be built in ten days.427 The festival pays for the work in full.427
"We have this incredible venue like no one else in the country has, usually with zero possibility of rain." - Paul Clemente87
The pitch process has changed. In 2013 Goldenvoice got about 300 proposals, a record.427 By 2016 it was picking six or seven pieces from as many as 250 and building almost all of them itself, with local firms and an on-site shop.416 Today the team mostly approaches artists directly, and most large work is built in a 20,000 sq ft tent near the grounds.87 Since 2024 the program has been curated with Public Art Company, founded by Raffi Lehrer, a former Goldenvoice associate art director.428429
The snail and the astronaut
In 2013 Poetic Kinetics brought Helix Poeticus: a snail about 30 ft tall and 80 ft long, with iridescent silver skin, built on top of a variable-reach forklift - the same kind of machine that builds the festival.427 It moved.
In 2014 the same studio brought Escape Velocity, an astronaut 36 ft tall made of steel tubing, chicken wire and pin rods, which drifted through the crowd on a forklift of its own.430 It "was to be sold" after the festival.430 In 2019 the astronaut came back, crouched at about 45 ft as Overview Effect, its suit looking "burnt from reentry."431
Spectra, which stayed
Spectra, a seven-story spiral tower with an observation deck by Patrick O'Mahony's studio Newsubstance, was commissioned in 2018.87 It was built in the UK, was meant to come down after 2020, and stayed, through Covid delays and because people liked it.87 The studio now calls it a "permanent feature" and lists appearances in Fortnite, Minecraft and Family Guy.432 Whether it is still standing in 2026 is less clear: ArchDaily's 2026 list of permanent works leaves it off.433
The wheel
The Ferris wheel is not Goldenvoice's. It belongs to Ray Cammack Shows, a Phoenix-area carnival family in business since 1963.85 The current wheel, the La Grande XL, replaced the original in 2017. According to the company's Ben Pickett, it arrives on 20 semis and goes up in five days with a 70-ton crane and a 10-person crew, with 36 air-conditioned gondolas.86 Phoenix New Times, in an undated piece, gives a different build: a 60-ton crane and 10 days.85 Either way, it is one of the few big things that stays standing for Stagecoach.84
Where the pieces go
Not all of it leaves. ArchDaily's 2026 list of works that now stay on the grounds includes Sarbalé ke, Etherea, Colossal Cacti, The Messengers, Monarchs and Mutts.433 Francis Kéré's Sarbalé ke has also gone the other way, into a park in Indio, and newer pieces are designed in modules so they can live on as public art somewhere else.434 The signs get reused by EcoSet.435
One 2016 piece was about the people next door. The Date Farmers' Sneaking into the Show was about Coachella Valley locals who live beside the festival but can't get in.416
The ticket
A Coachella day cost $50 in 1999.3 Weekend 1 GA for 2026 started at $649.46
Most people do not pay it at once. Coachella introduced payment plans in 2009, during the recession, against what was described as sluggish sales. That year 18-19% of buyers used one.439436 By 2025 about 60% did, according to Billboard's figure as reported by Entrepreneur, with $49.99 down, three installments and no interest.301 Miss a payment by more than 10 days and the order is cancelled automatically, and you get a credit good for a year.301
The tickets are sold by AXS, which is owned by AEG, the same company behind Goldenvoice.440 Before that, in 2014, the official seller was Front Gate Tickets.377
What you get is a wristband with an RFID chip. Intellitix's RFID access control was on Coachella by 2011.441 Now the band is registered once, in the Coachella app only, with a legal name and the six-letter code on the back. Two bands on one wrist block the scan, and passes from unauthorized sellers "can be canceled at any time." The official resale is AXS's own.442
That cancel button is also the weak spot. A seller can resell a band, report it lost or stolen, and have it switched off. CV Independent described the scam in 2014.377 In 2026 one buyer paid more than $2,000 for three bands on OfferUp that worked on day one and were dead on day two.443 The camping chapter has the rest of Scamchella.
Food and drink
Roy Choi's Kogi truck came to Coachella in 2009. In Choi's memory, festival food back then was "a world of sliced pizzas and sugary lemonade." His truck broke down and showed up late, and still, he says, "just instantly connected."310 Goldenvoice wanted Choi back, and started adding other chef-driven vendors.310 By 2017 culinary curator Nic Adler was booking more than 150 restaurants and vendors, over 40 of them curated, and pizza was $7 a slice.444445 In 2026 culinary director Adrian Garcia ran "over 100 bars and restaurants," including a Nobu omakase inside the Red Bull Mirage.446
Dinner in the Rose Garden
The VIP Rose Garden is the old polo club's garden, and every night of both weekends it seats a long-table dinner by Outstanding in the Field, the land artist Jim Denevan's traveling dinner series. It is about 200 guests a night, served family style: a welcome cocktail, four courses, Rose Garden access, and a festival pass required on top.81
It cost $225 in 2015 and 2016,311312 and $350 by 2023.447 The start date is muddy. LA Weekly covered it in 2015, while Flaunt billed 2026 as its 11th year, which would make the first one 2016.311446
Beer, and then beer anywhere
The Craft Beer Barn opened in 2014, when Adler asked Tony Yanow, of the LA bars Tony's Darts Away and Mohawk Bend, to build it: 120-150 beers on up to 40 taps, cash only.78 By 2017 it poured from 100-150 breweries and had a rare-beer bar inside.444 At Stagecoach the same barn is renamed for Guy Fieri.84
For most of the festival's life, drinking was fenced. Drinkers "were always confined to the beer gardens or craft beer areas," and couldn't carry a drink back onto the field.74 2023 was a soft change. 2024 was the first clear year of walk-around drinking, with IDs checked and 21+ wristbands handed out; the gardens stayed, but the guards at the exits stopped turning drinks back.74 The Independent reported that bars were spread across the grounds after complaints from people who had the wristband.75 A 16-oz Heineken that year was $15.74
Prices since then are mostly what attendees post. In 2026, as reported by attendees and collected by FOODbible, that meant a $24 Red Bull vodka, a $17 coffee and a $23 burrito.448
Still open
- How much power the festival draws, and how much of it comes from IID's grid against generators. Nothing has been published.
- How many people build it. The stagehand posting gives the dates, not a headcount.
- Whether a decibel limit exists in the Indio agreement, and if so what it is.
- Whether Spectra still stands.
