11The lineup and the poster
Until Jan. 1, 2019, Goldenvoice was making a Coachella poster with Kanye West at the top of it. The lineup came out on Jan. 2 without him.24384 Paul Tollett told the Los Angeles Times that West's production ideas were "great," but "we just weren't able to pull them off right now."385 The poster is the festival's whole pitch on one sheet, and it gets argued over, reworked and, now and then, thrown out the night before.
One man's inbox
Coachella's lineup is not a chart printout. Tollett, who co-founded the festival and still runs it as owner-operator in partnership with AEG, told the LA Times in 2019 that agents send him "another 3,000 or 4,000" acts a year on top of what he chases himself, and that he is "looking for 140 or 150 artists that are fresh."24 That year's anniversary bill came to 160 acts.24
"Fresh" is the point. He wants something unique for what he calls a "100-day window" around the festival, and he books against acts that have just played nearby.24 Some of what comes in he waves off. When WME's Marc Geiger pitched Kate Bush, Tollett's answer, as The New Yorker told it in 2017, was "No one is going to understand it."386
The same profile carried the clearest numbers ever published on what the bill costs. Tollett said each of the 2017 headliners - Radiohead, Lady Gaga and Kendrick Lamar - was paid about $3-4M, and the lowest-billed acts a little under $10,000.41 That is a gap of at least 300 times between the top line and the bottom line of the same poster. Pay is only part of what an agent is fighting over.
Twenty percent of the job
An agent negotiating a Coachella slot is negotiating four things at once: the fee, the stage, the time slot and the billing - where the name sits on the poster and how big it is. Headliners can demand top billing more than a year ahead.387 Wasserman's Lee Anderson told The Ringer that billing is "probably 20 percent of what I do for a living."387
The reason is that the poster reads like a ranking. The format has barely changed since 2003: names in rows, with the type shrinking line by line to show where an act stands.388 Agents bargain over that hard, and some call it one of the most stressful parts of booking a festival.388
The size is Goldenvoice's guess at an act's draw, and the guess can be wrong. 2 Chainz was billed small in 2013 and drew more people than his stage could hold.389 Tollett himself told The New Yorker that streaming has made it harder to tell whether an act belongs on the second line or the third.386
And sometimes the act reads the poster too. In 2019 Burna Boy, on the third tier, went on Instagram Live: "I am an AFRICAN GIANT and will not be reduced to whatever that tiny writing means."276 The Ringer cites his complaint as a case of an artist going public about type size.387 What he did next is in the chapter on what Coachella started.
Eurostile, and the one exception
Every name on the modern poster is set in one typeface, Eurostile LT, a wide, squared-off sans that looks like the label on a 1970s stereo.390 Its sameness is the point. If everyone gets the same letters, the only thing left to compare is size.
Goldenvoice broke the rule once. On the poster for 2025, "The Original Misfits" appeared in the band's own horror-movie lettering, dripping and jagged among the clean Eurostile names.390 Tollett's reason was history, not hype: "The Misfits are one of the first bands we promoted."390 The font was a thank-you note to one of Goldenvoice's own first bookings.
When the poster drops
For most of the festival's life the lineup came out in January. Music Festival Wizard's tally puts every drop from 2005 to 2012 somewhere between Jan. 9 and Jan. 31; that list is a single undated page, and at least one of its weekdays is wrong, so treat those early dates as approximate.392 From 2013 the dates are firmer, and they kept creeping earlier into the new year until the drop settled on the first days of January.393
Then the calendar broke. The 2025 lineup came out Nov. 20, 2024, about two months ahead of the old schedule.394 The 2026 lineup came out Sept. 15, 2025, about four months early.68 And for 2027 Goldenvoice skipped the poster altogether, at least at first: the dates (Apr. 9-11 and 16-18) were confirmed in April 2026 and advance passes went on sale before any names were announced.395 That sale opened May 1, 2026, with weekend 1 GA from $599 and a $49 down payment.396 As of Oct. 30, 2026, there was still no official 2027 lineup. TMZ reported SZA, Dua Lipa and Tame Impala as headliners, and Consequence wrote that the announcement was "expected soon."397
Why the drop moved
Goldenvoice has not said publicly why it moved the date, so everything here is the industry reading the tea leaves. The obvious context is 2024. Tickets for that year went on sale Jan. 19 and were still available a week later, as SFGate reported; Complex called it the "slowest ticket sales in ten years."401 Weekend 1 sold out about a month in.401 Weekend 2 never did.68 For a festival whose 2015 passes had reportedly gone in 40 minutes, that was a long month.401
The next on-sale did not fully fix it. Days after the Nov. 22, 2024 presale for 2025, weekend 1 GA was mostly gone, but weekend 2 GA was "widely available." Digital Music News noted that "for decades" Coachella had sold out the day tickets went on sale.402
Then the fall drop worked. The 2026 bill - Sabrina Carpenter, Justin Bieber and Karol G, with Anyma in a special slot - came out in mid-September, and both weekends sold out in about three days.53 By Pollstar's count it was the first time three pop acts had headlined, and Karol G was the first Latina headliner.68 Pollstar asked people in the business why. WME's Josh Kurfirst said "announcing early allows them to capture the hype around fall tours currently playing out."68 A venue owner, Stephen Chilton, offered a blunter guess: "they are trying to get out an onsale while things are as good as they are."68
The radius clause
The other reason the poster matters is what signing it costs an artist. Court filings in 2018 laid out the terms of Coachella's radius clause, the contract rule that limits where a booked act can play.403 According to Rolling Stone's reading of the filings, an act playing Coachella could not play any other North American festival from Dec. 15 to May 1. It could not play shows in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, Santa Barbara, Ventura or San Diego counties in that window. It could not promote another U.S. festival until Coachella's lineup was out. And it could not "advertise, publicize or leak" a show in a way that interfered with Coachella's marketing.403
Tollett defends it as ordinary. He compared it to car dealerships, each with its own region, and pointed out that artists usually come back to the area later in the year.24 In Tollett's telling, that 100-day window is the clause's whole purpose: for that stretch, the acts on the poster are something you can only see in Indio.24
In April 2018, Soul'd Out Productions, which ran a festival in Portland, Ore., sued Goldenvoice and AEG in federal court there. It said the clause propped up "an illegal monopoly," that SZA and Daniel Caesar had turned it down because of it, and that Goldenvoice waived the clause for its own festivals but not for rivals. Goldenvoice said it would "vigorously defend."404
The case took two and a half years. In March 2019 Judge Michael Mosman dismissed it with prejudice, finding no antitrust injury.405 In May 2020 the Ninth Circuit reversed and sent it back,406 and in August Mosman let it go to discovery.407 AEG's answer admitted the clause exists and raised 16 defenses, among them that the amount in dispute was under $75,000.408 In November 2020 the two sides settled. The case was dismissed with prejudice, "each party to bear its own attorneys' fees," and no terms were disclosed.409 No court ever decided whether the clause itself was legal.
The leaks
The radius clause says artists may not leak. In practice the biggest names keep giving themselves away. Rage Against the Machine announced 2020 reunion dates in November 2019 that more or less confirmed their headline slot, and Consequence named the 2020 headliners three days before the poster - though its first version wrongly included My Chemical Romance.410 In November 2024, Post Malone's own tour announcement revealed his Coachella headline a day before the poster.411
The ones who said no
The top line is also the hardest to fill, and the misses only surface as reports. For 2025, Digital Music News reported that Kendrick Lamar and Rihanna had declined headline offers.402 For 2027 the rumor cycle started in September 2026 with HITS, which named Tame Impala and Dua Lipa,412 and by late October TMZ was reporting that BTS and Rage Against the Machine had turned the festival down.397 None of that is confirmed by Goldenvoice, and none of it has to be. A festival that sells its passes before the poster is out has already been paid for the suspense.
When the top line falls out
The top line is the line that most often changes. Beyoncé withdrew from 2017 on her doctor's orders during her pregnancy. Lady Gaga took her slot, and Beyoncé was announced for 2018.413414 Justin Timberlake dropped out of 2019 weeks before the announcement, after a vocal cord injury disrupted his tour.24
Then came West. According to Billboard's report, relayed by Digital Music News, his team asked on New Year's Day for a huge dome in the middle of the grounds, designed and supervised by John McGuire, to be ready by the April 12 start. Goldenvoice said it could not be built in four months; it would also have meant moving a large portable-toilet area tied into sewer and water lines. West's reported answer was no dome, no show.161 Within about 24 hours, the same report says, Ariana Grande had the slot.161 Tollett confirmed to the LA Times that the poster with West on it was in production until Jan. 1.24 West did come to Coachella that year, on Easter Sunday, for Sunday Service on a hill built between weekends.365 That story is in the camping chapter.
The dome would have stood about where the toilets were. Every poster is a set of decisions like that one, made months early and quietly undone when they don't work out.
Still open
- Goldenvoice's own reason for the September drop. Two Billboard explainers that may contain it would not load for this chapter.
- The pre-2013 drop dates, which rest on one undated list.
- Whether the radius clause still reads the way the 2018 filings say it did. The settlement kept the current terms private.
